What Personal Data We Collect and Why We Collect It

Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Media

If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.

Contact Forms

If you use a contact form on our site, we capture the data you enter (such as your name, email address, and message) to respond to your inquiry. This data is stored for a period of 6 months for customer service purposes, but we do not use the information sent through the contact form for marketing purposes without your explicit consent.

Cookies

If you leave a comment on our site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.

If you visit our login page, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

When you log in, we will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.

If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie will be saved in your browser. This cookie includes no personal data and simply indicates the post ID of the article you just edited. It expires after 1 day.

Embedded Content from Other Websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Analytics

We use Google Analytics to collect anonymous information about how visitors use our website. This data includes information such as your IP address (which is anonymized), browser type, pages visited, and the time spent on the site. This helps us understand user behavior and improve our website. You can opt-out of Google Analytics by installing their browser add-on.

Who We Share Your Data With

We do not sell or rent your personal data to third parties. We may share your data with trusted third-party service providers under strict confidentiality agreements to help us operate our website and conduct our business. These parties include:

  • Our Hosting Provider: The company that hosts our website data
  • Analytics Providers: Such as Google Analytics
  • Email Service Providers: If you sign up for our newsletter, we will share your email address with our email marketing provider
  • Spam Detection Services: As mentioned in the comments section

We will also disclose your information where required to do so by law.

How Long We Retain Your Data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For users that register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.

Contact form entries are retained for 6 months. Analytics records are retained for 26 months, after which they are automatically deleted.

What Rights You Have Over Your Data

If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Where We Send Your Data

Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service.

As our website is hosted in South Africa, your data may be processed in that location. If we use service providers outside your country of residence, we will ensure appropriate safeguards are in place to protect your data.

How We Protect Your Data

We take reasonable steps to protect your data. This includes using SSL/HTTPS encryption across our site to ensure data transmitted between your browser and our server is secure. Our website is regularly scanned for vulnerabilities and malware. Access to personal data is limited to personnel who need it to perform their job functions.

What Data Breach Procedures We Have In Place

In the event of a data breach, we have procedures in place to identify, assess, and contain the breach. We will notify affected users and the relevant regulatory authorities as required by applicable law (such as South Africa’s POPIA).

What Third Parties We Receive Data From

We may receive data from third-party platforms for marketing or analytical purposes. For example, we might use social media platforms (like Facebook or Twitter) to run advertising campaigns and receive aggregated, anonymized reports on the performance of those ads.

What Automated Decision Making and/or Profiling We Do With User Data

We do not use user data for automated decision-making or profiling that has legal or similarly significant effects. We may use anonymized analytics data to profile user behavior in aggregate to improve our website and marketing campaigns, but this does not target specific individuals.

Industry Regulatory Disclosure Requirements

We comply with the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) of South Africa. If you are a resident of the European Economic Area (EEA), we also respect the rights granted to you under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

Note: This privacy policy may be updated from time to time. We encourage you to review this page periodically for any changes.
